Junior Global Ambassadors: Model United Nations (MUN)

Prerequisite:

Open to students entering grade(s): Grade 4 - 6

Course Description:

Step into the shoes of a diplomat! In this interactive summer course, students in grades 4-6 discover how the United Nations helps countries solve big problems together. They explore real-world issues like protecting endangered animals, practice negotiation and compromise, and build confidence to speak up and be heard. Working in teams, students research global challenges from their assigned country's perspective, then put their skills into action during an exciting two-day Model UN conference—delivering speeches, building agreements, and voting on their own resolution. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity, creativity, and a desire to make a difference!

Learner Outcomes:

This course builds essential life skills through the lens of global diplomacy. By the end of the session, students will:

  • Develop Confident Communication: Find their voice by writing and delivering speeches, asking questions, and expressing ideas clearly in front of peers—building public speaking skills that benefit them in school and beyond.
  • Strengthen Critical Thinking: Examine global issues from multiple perspectives, moving beyond "right or wrong" to understand how different countries and people view the world.
  • Master the Art of Collaboration: Practice negotiation and compromise by working in teams to find common ground, resolve disagreements respectfully, and build agreements that work for everyone.
  • Build Research and Inquiry Skills: Gain confidence in asking questions and gathering information as they explore real-world topics and represent their assigned country.
  • Cultivate Resilience and Adaptability: Experience the ups and downs of debate, learn that setbacks are part of the process, and develop the confidence to try again.
  • Understand Global Citizenship: Grasp the basic purpose of the United Nations and come away believing that their voice can help solve big problems.

Methodology:

This course uses a child-centered, scaffolded approach to make diplomacy accessible and engaging.

  • Scaffolded Learning: Complex MUN concepts are broken into digestible steps. Students begin with games and visuals, progress to structured research and writing, and finally apply their skills in a simplified simulation.
  • Learning by Doing: Each session balances skill-building with interactive activities. Students practice public speaking daily, negotiate during team challenges, and learn procedure through fun practice debates.
  • Collaborative Workshops: Students work in pairs and small groups to research, brainstorm, and draft ideas, using graphic organizers and sentence starters to support their thinking.
  • Simplified Simulation: The course culminates in a two-day conference where students apply their learning in a supportive, low-pressure environment, ending with a celebration of their achievements.
