The Art of Reading and Writing
Prerequisite:
Open to students entering grade(s): Grade 2 - 3
Course Description:
This interactive, activity‑based course helps students strengthen their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while building confidence and a love for literacy. Students will explore different kinds of reading and writing activities that help them understand stories better and express their ideas clearly.
Through teacher demonstrations, class discussions, and fun group activities, students will learn how writers make their work interesting and how to share their own ideas in a clear and meaningful way. They will also have chances to try both guided writing and free‑choice writing to become more independent and confident writers.

- Build foundational writing skills, including sentence structure and paragraph organization
- Develop writing skills through the full Writing Process

- Explore figurative language and authors’ craft
- Create a personal anthology of creative pieces
Methodology:
- Read‑aloud, shared, guided, and independent reading using both teacher‑selected and self‑selected texts
- Inquiry‑based activities to explore various forms of literature
- Teacher-led lessons focused on writing complete sentences, combining sentences, and using varied sentence structures effectively
- Explicit instruction in grammar, transitions, and paragraph construction
- Opportunities for guided and free-choice writing
Assessment:
Students will maintain a writing portfolio that includes all drafts. While pieces are not formally graded, teachers will conference regularly with students to highlight strengths and identify areas for improvement. Students will reflect on their progress through reflection sheets or sharing activities.
