Mandarin Workshop

Session 2 [AM]: Grade 3 - 5
Session 2 [PM]: Reception 2 - Grade 2

Course Description:

This program is designed to strengthen young children’s Mandarin language development. Through a variety of activities, students will learn Mandarin in a fun and relaxed environment. Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on crafts, cooking, storytelling, poetry illustration, Chinese calligraphy, and singing activities. They will explore classical Chinese poems and gain an understanding of traditional Chinese culture, while enhancing their speaking, listening, reading comprehension, and writing skills. In a warm and encouraging atmosphere, students will gradually build confidence and apply what they have learned to improve their overall Mandarin proficiency.

Learner Outcomes:

Students will:

  • Enhance oral expression and listening comprehension skills
  • Acquire new vocabulary in meaningful contexts
  • Read and write basic Chinese characters and simple sentence structures related to daily-life topics
  • Develop foundational writing skills
  • Learn basic Pinyin
  • Familiarise themselves with two to three classical Chinese poems
  • Explore and appreciate traditional Chinese culture
  • Increase their interest in learning Mandarin

Methodology:

Our approach centers around play-based learning, where fun and exploration lead the way! Each class will include:

  • Students will create arts and crafts and present their work in Mandarin to the class
  • Storytelling and games will be used to improve comprehension and expressive skills
  • Songs and rhymes will create an enjoyable learning atmosphere and help students master new vocabulary
  • Flashcards, games, and other interactive activities will boost students’ interest in listening and speaking
  • Drawing will be incorporated to help students understand and visualize classical poems
  • Role-play activities will enhance oral communication skills
  • Chinese character writing will be practiced through game-based exercises
  • A scrapbook reflecting students’ progress and achievements will be compiled throughout the course

Assessment:

We will use ongoing assessment to ensure students meet daily learning objectives in speaking, listening, reading comprehension, and Chinese character writing.
