Phonics, Art and Storytelling: Creating Your Own Graphic Novel

Course Description
Learn and use Phonics skills to read and write graphic novels. In this course students will learn phonics skills and use them to read and write their own graphic novels. Students will also learn various illustration techniques.
This course combines phonics, illustration techniques, the art of storytelling, and the writing process. This course empowers students to create their very own graphic novels. Through engaging activities and hands-on projects, students will enhance their reading skills, learn to illustrate characters and scenes, and craft compelling narratives.

Develop their Phonics skills
Improve their reading skills by developing their Phonics skills
Engage in the writing process
Use mentor text to explore graphic novels.
Learn basic drawing techniques to create their own characters and backgrounds
Understand the structure of a graphic novel, including how to effectively use panels, dialogue, and narration
Create an original story, combining their illustrations and text to produce a complete graphic novel
Collaborate with their peers to brainstorm ideas and provide feedback on each other's stories
Methodology:
Students will engage with various graphic novel mentor texts and use an inquiry approach to examine and define common features. Students will also explore word features (i.e. phonemes and graphemes) to broaden their phonics skills. Finally, students will looking at various illustrating techniques and combine all that they have learned to write their own graphic novel. This course culminates with a publishing party where students will share their writing with others!
