Scouts

Scouts troops are offered on and off campus for all HKIS students. The three scout organizations are administered and coordinated by volunteer parents. They include Boy Scouts of America , Cub Scouts a phase of the Boy Scouts of America, and Girl Scouts of the USA.

The Scout programs aim to positively influence character development, citizenship, sportsmanship and respect. The program also provides opportunities for kids to work together with adult volunteers, develop leadership skills, serve the community, and share camaraderie.

Cub Scouts of America

Cub Scouting is a year-round, family-oriented program for boys in R2 to 5th grade that builds character, confidence, and camaraderie.  Cub Scouts Pack 1 is part of the Boy Scouts of America and is chartered by HKIS. Pack 1 is a family-focused activity that is 100% organized and run by parent volunteers.

Scouting provides an opportunity for parents to teach their Cub Scout family values through hands-on activities and outdoor adventures, including hikes, cookouts, and campouts. Scouts learn to tie knots, pitch a tent, kayak, cook over an open fire that they built, use a knife safely, and much more. Cub Scouting provides skills and memories that will last a lifetime.

Pack 1 is organized into dens of 6-10 scouts as follows.

Grade 1 - Tiger Cubs
Grade 2 - Wolf Cubs
Grade 3 - Bear Cubs
Grade 4 - Webelos I
Grade 5 - Webelos II

Scouts meet with their dens twice a month on average for a planned activity or fun outing in order to fulfill requirements for rank advancement. Den meetings are often held at home after school or on the weekend and the schedule is determined by each den. Scouts meet as a Pack once per month, this year scheduled for Monday nights from 5:00-6:30 at HKIS.

What we do as a Pack:

  • Monthly meetings for community building, communication, and fun
  • Adventure Day trips in the fall and spring
  • Overnight campout on Lantau Island
  • Cookout and campfire at Tai Tam Scout Center
  • Awards and recognition for advancement
  • Community service projects (e.g., beach cleanup, food drive)
  • Pinewood Derby and Raingutter Regatta races with DIY boat and race car kits
  • Annual Blue and Gold family end-of-year banquet

Mission, Aims, and Methods

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.

Scout Oath: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

The Aims of Scouting are: Character, Citizenship, Personal Fitness, and Leadership.  To achieve these Aims, the Cub Scout program uses the following methods:

Living the Ideals; Belonging to a Den; Advancement; Family Involvement; Activities; Serving the Neighborhood; The Uniform

We welcome all boys and their families to join us this year, both as Scouts and as volunteer leaders.  We're all new at this so don't let inexperience stop you from volunteering.  Remember the Cub Scout Motto is Do Your Best, and as long as we Do Our Best the Pack will go far!
