Beyond the Classroom: Exploring Fantasy in Reading and Writing

Open to students entering grade(s): Grade 5 - 6
Course Description
Have you always wanted to write a sci‑fi graphic novel but never had the time? Or have you dreamed of writing a fantasy story, but your class is always focused on information writing? Now’s your chance! This summer, join us as we break some writing rules and explore exciting branches of fantasy, such as alternative fairytales, magical adventures, myth‑inspired tales, and epic quests, while experimenting with both short and long pieces of writing. We’ll read books, watch snippets of famous movies, uncover the secrets behind crafting imaginative stories, and then write away!
Learner Outcomes:
Students will:
Develop world‑building skills by creating original settings, cultures, maps, creatures, and magical systems that bring their stories to life.
Explore and experiment with different approaches to fantasy writing, from world‑building to character creation.
Write narratives that bring real or imagined experiences to life using strong techniques, rich details, and clear sequencing.
Edit and revise their work to make their ideas stronger, clearer, and more creative.
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences
Publish their writing, celebrating their hard work in a polished final product.
Create a personal anthology filled with original writing pieces they’ll be proud to share.
Read and write for pleasure, discovering new authors and genres that inspire their imagination.
Methodology:
Students will read and write a variety of texts
Students will familiarize themselves with the writing process
Students will use technology to publish their writing at high standards of quality and creativity
Students will contribute one or two pieces of writing for inclusion in a published anthology
Assessment:
Students will be assessed and scored on pieces of on-demand writing, using grade-level appropriate rubrics for students entering grades 5 – 6.
