Story Workshop

Prerequisite:

Open to students entering grade(s): Reception 2

Course Description:

Join us for a magical program designed for three, four, and five-year-olds! In our Story Workshop, inspired by Susan Harris Mackay’s innovative approach, children will explore the art of storytelling through play, creativity, and imagination.

Throughout the workshop, young storytellers will engage in interactive activities that encourage them to create their own stories using a variety of materials, including puppets, props, and art supplies. Each session will include group storytelling, imaginative play, and hands-on projects that foster language development and social skills.

By the end of the program, children will not only have crafted their unique tales but also gained confidence in sharing their ideas with others. Your little ones will blossom into confident storytellers!

Learner Outcomes:

Creative Expression: Children will demonstrate the ability to create and express original stories using various materials and formats.

Language Development: Participants will enhance their vocabulary and storytelling skills through interactive activities and group discussions.

Imagination and Play: Children will engage in imaginative play, using props and puppets to bring their stories to life.

Listening Skills: Participants will improve their active listening skills by engaging with peers’ stories and responding thoughtfully.

Confidence Building: Children will build self-confidence by sharing their stories with the group and participating in collaborative storytelling.

Social Skills: Participants will develop teamwork and cooperation skills through group activities and collaborative projects.

Critical Thinking: Children will practice critical thinking by making decisions about characters, settings, and plot development in their stories.

Fine Motor Skills: Participants will enhance their fine motor skills through hands-on activities, such as drawing, crafting, and manipulating story-related materials.

Methodology:

Play-Based Learning: The workshop will utilize a play-based approach, allowing children to engage in hands-on, imaginative activities that foster creativity and exploration. This encourages natural curiosity and makes learning enjoyable.

Interactive Storytelling: Instructors will facilitate interactive storytelling sessions where children can participate by adding their ideas, creating characters, and developing plots. This collaborative environment promotes engagement and communication skills.

Multi-Sensory Activities: The program will incorporate various materials and tools, such as puppets, art supplies, and props, to cater to different learning styles. This multi-sensory approach helps children connect with stories in diverse ways.

Guided Discovery: Educators will guide children through the storytelling process by providing prompts and questions that stimulate imagination. This method encourages critical thinking and helps children articulate their thoughts.

Group Collaboration: Children will work in small groups for collaborative storytelling projects, fostering teamwork and enhancing social skills. This setting allows for peer feedback and shared learning experiences.

Reflection and Sharing: Each session will include time for children to reflect on their stories and share them with the group. This promotes self-expression and builds confidence in public speaking.

Thematic Units: The workshop will be organized around specific themes (e.g., adventures, animals, friendships) to provide structure while allowing for flexibility in creativity. This thematic approach helps connect stories and ideas.

Assessment:

Ongoing Assessment: Instructors will observe and assess children's progress through informal assessments, such as participation in activities and the development of storytelling skills, ensuring that each child’s growth is recognized and supported.
