Summer Adventure Day Camp (G1-2)

Open to students entering grade(s): Grade 1 - 2

Course Description:

Looking to expand your child’s interest in learning while having fun? By providing opportunities that inspire inquiry through hands-on tinkering, building, thinking, collaborating, creative,imaginative activities and projects. Inquiry-based learning like project work allows children to investigate a question or problem over a period of time. Learning is a product of many experiences over time, it takes more than a single experience for learning to happen. One of the best aspects of this approach is that they often lead to extended, ongoing investigations. Learning experiences that extend beyond one-off activities, that can be repeated or returned to, and that lend themselves to ongoing involvement, encourage deep learning. This allows children to develop the skills and processes of learning such as problem-solving, inquiry, experimentation, researching and investigating. In these three weeks, teachers will support and guide the children as needed based on their interests, engaging in a series of activities that will enrich their learning experience. They will engage with different types of materials in small and large group activities to construct an understanding of different concepts and choices. They will also be sharing their ideas, thoughts, predictions, questions, and learning daily to help maintain growth in all their learning skills.

• Work on fine and gross motor skills

Methodology:

• They will participate in large and small group activities each day. They will learn to cooperate with other children and work independently to complete projects. This course will provide in-depth learning and will enable students to make connections across curricular areas
• Sessions will begin with a group activity and a discussion about the day's schedule. Students will then participate in teacher-led and independent activities
• The class will include discussions, read aloud, hands-on activities, projects, games and reflective journaling
• Emphasis on caring, cooperation, kindness, and other age-appropriate social skills
• A deliberate effort will be made to teach age-appropriate communication skills. Students will practice turn taking, listening and respectful behaviour. Students will also practice using self-help skills
