Robotics & Maker Adventures: Build, Code and Create
Prerequisite:
Open to students entering grade(s): 2 - 3
(No prior robotics experience needed—just bring your curiosity and creativity)
Course Description:
Get ready for an exciting hands-on adventure where robotics meets creativity! In this dynamic summer program, students will explore the world of coding, engineering, and design through interactive robotics challenges and maker activities.
We’ll kick things off with VEX Robotics 123 and Bee-Bot, where students will learn the basics of robotics and programming in a fun, engaging way. Once they’ve mastered the fundamentals, we’ll level up to LEGO WeDo, where they can build, code, and bring their imaginative creations to life!
But that’s not all—throughout the program, we’ll introduce maker challenges that encourage students to think outside the box, work as a team, and solve real-world problems. Whether they’re designing and building a smart city or creating their own interactive game, students will develop confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills while having a blast!
This course is perfect for students who love to tinker, invent, and explore—no prior experience required!
Learner Outcomes:
Students will:
- Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through exciting hands-on challenges
- Collaborate with teammates to design, build, and program their own robotic creations
- Explore the engineering design thinking process from brainstorming to prototyping and testing
Gain confidence in technology, teamwork, and creative expression
Methodology:
This course follows a playful, inquiry-based approach, where students learn by experimenting, questioning, and discovering through hands-on activities. Each session is designed to ignite curiosity and encourage exploration, allowing students to develop a deep understanding of robotics and problem-solving in an engaging and interactive way.
We begin with VEX Robotics 123 and Bee-Bot, introducing foundational coding and robotics concepts through guided exploration and open-ended challenges. As students gain confidence, we transition to LEGO WeDo, where they can take ownership of their learning by designing and coding more complex robotic projects.
Throughout the program, students engage in collaborative maker challenges that encourage them to ask questions, test ideas, iterate on their designs, and reflect on their learning. These challenges provide opportunities for students to think critically, work creatively, and develop resilience as they troubleshoot and refine their projects.
By fostering a supportive and playful learning environment, this course ensures that students develop essential 21st-century skills while having fun. Whether they are beginners or budding engineers, students will leave this program with a strong foundation in robotics, a passion for innovation, and the confidence to tackle new challenges!
