Program Overview

The HKIS Rockstars Rock Climbing ASAs makes the DCAA Rock Climbing Wall at the Tai Tam campus available to Middle School and Primary students during the regular ASA Term. The Climbing Wall at DCAA features a 10m climbing wall with various routes suitable for beginners, with harder climbs suitable for more advanced climbers. During the ASA the focus will be on top rope climbing. This ASA is not competition focused, rather we encourage students to learn and activity which they can contine to enjoy many years down the line. For those who are keen on joining climbing competitions, we can suggest several student level competitions throughout the year.

New students who join will be introduced to top rope climbing in the ASAs, understanding the safety aspect of climbing, belaying and rope management. Rock Climbing is a social sport, and encourages students to challenge themselves physically and mentally. At the same time it also encourages teamwork, to trust others and the self especially while being belayed or belaying others. For returning climbers, our instructors will continue giving guidance based on where they left off, with technique, strength, route reading/planning coaching available to students.

ASA LEARNING OUTCOMES

We will start with learning the fundamental safety aspect of climbing, including knots for tying-in, checks and calls.
Students will be introduced to belaying, the Grigri+ belay device and how it works.
Students will get the chance to climb and belay with their friends in a supervised setting.
Students will develop self confidence as they learn how to plan routes and solve problems while climbing.
As students climb more they will see increases in physical and body awareness, strength and stamina.
Be part of of a student community of climbers! You could be a mentor or mentee to other students in the HKIS community.
