Program Overview

Middle School Debate gives students an exciting opportunity to learn competitive debating, train and grow as debaters, enjoy intellectual challenges, and engage with some of the best young minds across Hong Kong. Through debate, students will develop skills including public speaking, critical thinking, and global awareness that are essential for success in today’s world.

Hong Kong's debate scene is extremely strong, consistently ranking as one of the top teams at the World Championships. In recent years, an increasing number of our Middle School debaters have gone on to represent the national team in High School.

In addition to the core debate classes, our program also offers an Advanced class for competition-focused debaters, and a brand new Beginner class this year.

The group is coached by Perry Ge, former HK National Team co-coach, captain, and development squad coach. To ensure students in each class are at an appropriate and similar level, tryouts are required for enrolment (except for Beginner classes). For continuity, Term 1 students in non-Beginner classes will be given priority to re-enroll for Term 2.

In this class, students will:

  • Develop core debate skills - critical thinking, knowledge of global issues, argument development & analysis, speaking style & confidence, and debating strategy.
  • Prepare for competitions - motion prep, research, team strategy, tournament mindsets.
  • Train in competitive debating while refining their skills in public speaking, argumentation, thinking on their feet, teamwork, and knowledge of global affairs.
  • Practice developing cases for and debating a multitude of topics covering social, political, moral, environmental, economic, and international affairs. As they progress, they will also cover strategies for winning debates, analysing arguments, and employing rhetoric and rebuttal effectively.
