Listen Up! Cultural Contributions through Nonfiction Texts and Podcasts

Course Description:

Share your cultural traditions! Embark on an exciting adventure where you get to create your very own podcast that celebrates the amazing contributions of your culture. Join us in this fun-filled course designed especially for the 5th, 6th, and 7th graders, where you'll uncover fascinating stories, traditions, music, and art that make your heritage unique and shape your identity. Through research, interviews, and storytelling techniques, you will produce captivating podcast episodes that will make your cultural heritage shine. Get ready to ignite your curiosity and showcase your cultural pride in this interactive podcasting journey.

Learner Outcomes:

  • In reading, students will identify the main idea of nonfiction texts, summarize texts, take notes, and draw conclusions. 
  • In writing, students will introduce a topic clearly, link ideas with transition words, provide a concluding statement, and organize ideas.

Methodology:

Students will begin by becoming familiar with podcasting, learning to listen as podcasters with a focus on structure. Then, students will choose to share various parts of their culture and traditions, conducting additional research to supplement their personal connections. After writing a script, they will record their podcast episode, which will be shared with the class.
