Painting Through The Ages

Prerequisite:

Open to students entering grade(s): 6 - 12

Course Description:

This course will explore painting techniques through the ages, from Rembrandt to Rego and Pissaro to Pollock. Students will be taught various techniques that will enable them to identify and begin to hone their own style. Alongside painting techniques, participants will be introduced to other mediums, such as collage and printmaking, enabling them to experiment and enjoy the creative process.

Students will:

  • Apply numerous painting techniques
  • Identify painting styles through throughout history
  • Learn to take risks and experiment
  • Develop their own style
  • Overcome stumbling blocks with regards to putting an idea onto paper.

Methodology:

Through demonstration students will be guided through many ways of working on canvas. paper and wood.  They will learn how to apply different materials and techniques to different surfaces as well as working through the various stages of completion - how to bring an idea to life - from concept and preliminary sketches to underpainting,  color blocking and fine details.  Building up important skills that will serve them well with planning in general. 

Assessment:

The activity will involve group critiques, where participants will have the opportunity to share their work and engage in discussions about their outcomes and any challenges.
