ENGINEERS - Let's Build!
Prerequisite:
Open to students entering grade(s): 1 - 3
Course Description:
Children love to construct and demolish! This course will encourage children to imagine, design, create, manipulate and explore structures. This course provides an opportunity for children to practice design thinking while building objects with a variety of materials and construction techniques. There are opportunities to test building materials and solve problems related to structure and design.
This year, we will apply engineering principles to build, test, and improve teepees, Lego zip lines, balloon-powered Lego cars, marble runs, toothpick bridges, aluminium foil boats, and much more! Class activities may vary in different sessions according to the class dynamic.
Learner Outcomes:
Students will:
- Develop an awareness of how things are built
- Understand which materials are best to use when building a structure
- Understand the engineering process of imagining, creating, testing, and improving
- Think creatively to solve problems
- Recreate famous structures
- Practice social and communication skills
Methodology:
- Students will work independently and collaboratively to complete projects
- Students will learn specific design techniques and practice the HKIS Lower Primary Design Cycle
- Students will learn how to build a bridge, among other chosen structures
- Students will engage in fun activities and design challenges
- Students will learn to create plans and blueprints of their creations
- Students will discuss and keep a record of construction designs
- Students will practice collaborating and cooperating in teams with other children
